40 Balloons

on November 11, 2012
Chris turned the big 4-0 last weekend and I wanted to do something special to celebrate his birthday. He warned me not to throw a surprise party so I didn’t. I did want to surprise him, though, so I sent balloons out to family and friends with instructions to write a special message on the balloon and send it back to me.
I gave Chris the gift of all the balloons and he had to blow them up to read the messages. I did have mercy on him, though, and bought a helium tank. Chris’s Love Language is Words of Affirmation, which I don’t provide nearly enough (I’ve got to work on that), and there are so many people who love and admire Chris that I thought it would be fun, and perhaps make him slightly uncomfortable, to show him just how wonderful we all think he is.
At first I think Chris was confused and annoyed that he didn’t know what was going on but when he figured out all the balloons were from special people in his life, some he hadn’t heard from in a long time, he was genuinely surprised, deeply moved (to tears), and expressed how much the gift meant to him.
I adapted the idea from somewhere on the Internet but I’m not sure what site. I’m so glad it worked out even though a few loved ones forgot to send the balloons back. He commented about celebrating my 40th birthday (in 2016) and I told him he can just take me back to NYC. (grin)
